The making of the Dutch Connection soccer team in the Maritimes.

Ball

In the spring of 2007, an indoor soccer tournament for people age 35 and over was held in the Halifax/Dartmouth region of Nova Scotia. The teams that participated were construed of people from about 8 different cultural backgrounds, such as the English, Lebanese, Scots and German etc.

However, no Dutch team participated or had been even formed at that time. One of the organising committee members of this tournament, a vivid soccer player and Dutchman himself, Harry Soontiens, wanted to change that.

Mascotte

As more and more Dutch people in the Maritimes who are into soccer found out about it, thru postings on De Muurkrant (a media for Dutch oriented Maritimers) and the Dutch Truck, there became a desire to start up a Dutch Maritime Soccer Team, in order to participate in the tournament that is slated for April 12 and 13, 2008 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

As there is a fee for the tournament, De Muurkrant decided to sponsor that part of the costs for the team. Our first scrimmage was held in Fredericton, NB in January 2008.

Plans for a team name started to float around, and the name we have taken on for this maritime soccer team is: Dutch Connection. A development for a logo for the team was put forward by one of the players, (who also is connected to a local Fredericton company that sells and prints soccer shirts) and the idea of having our own team shirts with the Dutch Connection logo on it was born.

Amsterdam inn

We approached the Amsterdam Inn, with motels in Quispamsis, Sussex, Fredericton and Moncton, New Brunswick and we are very pleased that the Amsterdam Inn motel chain became our sponsor of the team’s Dutch Connection soccer shirts.

The NB Dutch Treat organisation of New Brunswick is sponsoring water bottles for the players and other incidentals. Dutch Treat NB is a New Brunswick organisation for Dutch speaking immigrants and helps new immigrants with a speedy integration into the local Canadian culture.
